Embroidery thread is available in a wide range of hues, so you can go a little crazy with color and still get what your design calls for. The same holds for shapes. As long as your design fits the space, your design—not some rule—calls the shots.

• Tape—works best for situations where you need something fast and don’t expect to use it very often

• Velcro—a more permanent solution when you need to remove patches often

• Plastic—helps patches fight wear and tear so they last longer under heavy use
